Why I created XX♀
I was a tomboy.
I needed time, not a label.
I grew up in the 1980s climbing trees, getting dirty, playing with boys' toys and preferring plenty of things people considered “for boys.” My father had three daughters. I knew he had wanted a son, but a son never came.
Looking back, maybe that influenced me. Maybe it didn't. That's the point. Children are complicated little human beings. Family, friends, culture, imagination, expectations, rebellion and curiosity all shape us before we even have words for ourselves.
Nobody needed to give me an identity because I climbed trees or liked boys' toys. I needed something much simpler: time.
If I were growing up today, people might have tried to find a label for me before I understood myself. Lesbian. Queer. Gender nonconforming. Trans. Something else. Maybe I would have embraced one for a while. Maybe I wouldn't have.
She's a tomboy. Or even better: she's a kid. Let her grow.
That is one reason I created XX♀. I want women to speak honestly, detransitioners to tell stories people may find uncomfortable, parents to ask difficult questions, and children to have time to become themselves.
Kids should be allowed to be kids.
Women should be allowed to speak.
Our stories should be allowed to matter.
